World Heart Day is a global campaign led by the World Heart Federation (WHF) that aims to raise awareness of the world’s leading cause of death—cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is observed annually on 29 September.

The initiative was first proposed by WHF President Dr. Antoni Bayés de Luna during his tenure and was officially launched in 1999 with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO. The first official World Heart Day was celebrated in 2000.

National CPR Day, observed annually on July 17, traces its roots to Republic Act No. 10871, also known as the “Samboy Lim Law,” enacted in 2016, which mandates CPR training in schools. Building on this initiative, the observance was officially declared a national event in 2024, in an effort to strengthen public health preparedness and promote life-saving skills in every Filipino household.
